Murderabilia To Be Banned

A Bill has been introduced into the US House of Representatives to ban prisoners from selling personal items.

The Bill was introduced by Dave Rigchert who was a former county sherrif who spent almost 20 years tracking the Green River Killer - Gary Ridgway.

Apparently Charles Manson's gingerprint chart is up for sale.

Biopic Manson Film Due

The news is that the director of the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", Marus Nispel, is due to make a film about Charles Manson with his former writer Scott Kosar.

Marcus stated:

"This is different for both of us, because we don't see it as a great reason to do some damage and splash blood. It's a responsible movie. I love those ones that have a detailed account of reality, like "Black Hawk Down", and you have to really pay attention to that--you can't go out and make a fantasy where anything can happen. But to do it takes discipline".

"Almost all of those films are told from a legal point of view, or what you'd
hear in a trial. So the thing you have to do is look at it from an emotional
angle... Scott found a very interesting point of view from an insider".

Nispel has the Pathfinder Movie coming out soon which may bring a lot of attention to the potential Manson biopic by association.

Parole in California

Sasha Abramsky has written a pretty interesting piece on the how "lifers" are unlikely to get parole in the Californian prison system.

He contrasts two inmates: Charles Manson & Jerry Elster. He contends that the various California Governors don't look at how an inmate has been rehabilitated and generally refuses parole.

Sasha states that it is correct to refuse Manson parole as "releasing him wouldn't serve the public interest". However, he cites that the decision to refuse Jerry Elster his freedom even though he could be considered " a model in inmate in San Quentin". The board of Governors recommended him for release but Governor Schwarzenegger refused stating that the public would be at risk were he be released.

So where do you draw the line, how do you qualify or even quantify risk? How can you say that one inmate would represent a risk and another not?

Is this "risk" really a "risk of not getting re-elected or loosing political capital? Which Governor would release a convicted killer early, there would surely be no advantage of doing so. Think of the effect that it would have if a killer paroled happened to kill someone again whether intentially or not. The impact would be huge.

Letters from the Pen

The Karpeles Museum - 94 Broadway in Newburgh, has an exhibit until Sept. 30 called "Letters from the Pen," which shows original letters, in original handwriting, from the famous and the infamous during their various turns in jail.

There are letters from Leon Czolgosc who killed President McKinley as well as the Boston Strangler - Albert De Salvo.

More Celebrity Tourism or Historical Education

The Hamilton County Museum of History is offering tours of the Sheriff's Residence and Jail in Courthouse Square in Noblesville (317) 770-0775.

So where do we draw the line between voyeurism and education? To me that line is so thin its almost impossible to define.

If there tour allows people to understand the mind of Charles Manson - or if it allows them an insight into his mind then sure its of benefit. Just because people believe his actions to be unsavoury, it doesn't mean his thoughts and deeds should be isolated to minds of psychologists.

For those that are interested, the jail is listed in the Register of Historic Places and was built in 1875 and has many items of local historical interest. It is open between 10am and 4pm Thursdays -Saturdays and 1-4pm on Sundays from Mermorial day through Labor Day.

Entrance is free but donations are welcome.

Tragedy Voyeurism

The Indy Star reports on the growing interest in Murder Voyeurism. Sites like FindaDeath.com help people find the locations of celebrity murders. Whilst some visit those homes, offices and waste land to show their respects, others just visit out of curiosity.

Scott Micheals, owner of the site told the Indy Star: "Locations where these notorious events occur become landmarks. Some of national significance, some local. And when something that horrible happens down the street, or just a few streets over, you can't help wanting to have a look."

Gary J. Gorman, a retired New York Police Department officer who runs a tour business that takes people to famous New York crime scenes, explains it this way:

"Some people want to go just to answer the question: 'Could this happen to me, or, why this family?' " said Gorman, who charges $25 per person for a tour of the World Trade Center site. "Were they rich? Drug dealers? Gang members? (They are looking for) things they feel may not be in the papers."

Mansen Trial Judge Dies

Charles H. Older, 88 was the Los Angeles Superior Court judge who presided over the trial over Charles Manson and his followers died on June 17th from complications related to a fall.

During the trial Mr Older withstood an attempted attack from Manson and sent one of the Los Angeles Times reporters to jail for failing to reveal a source for a story he wrote on the case.

Police capture Charles Manson at Barker Ranch, inside Death Valley National Park. Charlie is arrested for arson, after burning a maintenance vehicle blocking his favorite dune buggy route. One of his followers, Susan Atkins, is arrested the following day and spills the beans about the Tate/LaBianca murderers. Manson has not left prison since.

6 Nov 1969
Manson Family member Susan Atkins tells her cellmate that Steve McQueen, Richard Burton, Tom Jones, and Frank Sinatra are on their "death list."

27 Nov 1969
Court appointed attorney Ronald Hughes, handling the Charles Manson case, disappears on a camping trip to Sespe Hot Springs in Northern California, accompanied by two Manson followers. His decomposed body is identified by dental x-rays five months later.

1 Mar 1970
Charles Manson releases his guitar folk album Lie: The Love & Terror Cult in order to finance his legal defense. The record consists of songs recorded in Van Nuys, California in 1968.

5) Don't bother trying to visit him.

A new study looking at the psychology of infamous killers aims to define a new medical condition - but could there really be a "killer disease"? But what could actually turn somebody into a killer? Or a killers born and they're just given the opportunity to perform their sub/consious wishes?

The study reports that a killer is a biological product in that their brains are less emotionaly connected or they have damaged frontal lobes fo the brain - either by accident or inheretance.

"There's a genetic predisposition in some people to psychopathy and perhaps even to sadism," said forensic psychiatrist Dr. Michael Stone.

The study's author states that there are 22 grades of evil. The first is "justifiable homocide" Stone comments, this is an evil act committed by an otherwise good person. The scale grades Charles Manson as a sixteen, which was the same grading as Adolf Hitler. Hitler gets the same as Manson despite the fact that he killed millions, he did so at a distance. I've not seen eveidence that he killed anyone personally.

Saddam Hussein gets a seventeen because of his “Incredible sadism, reveling in the pain of others is something extraordinary about Saddam Hussein that surpassed even the actual activities of Hitler.”

At the top was Dennis Rader - the B.T.K. Killer.
